Tell me where your internship took place and what were your responsibilities?
“During my internship with the Champion City Kings, I was involved in fan engagement. My responsibilities included organizing pregame activities, coordinating with participants for the Field of Dreams event, and managing various in-game fan activities such as games for the kids, T-shirt tosses, and selecting the ‘Kid of the Game.’ I also took part in postgame duties like teardown and cleanup, and ensuring the stadium was ready for the next event.
“What I liked most about my internship was the hands-on experience of being right in the middle of the action during game days. My favorite part was the interaction with the fans, especially the kids, and seeing the excitement on their faces during the events I helped organize. The opportunity to be involved in live sports and contribute to creating memorable experiences for the fans were incredibly rewarding.”
What did you learn through this experience and how did it help you?
“Throughout my internship, I strengthened my organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Handling fan engagement activities required precise coordination and quick decision-making, which improved my ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure. I also gained valuable experience in event planning and execution, which will be beneficial in any future roles within the sports management or communication world.”
How has your time and experience at Wittenberg prepared you for this internship?
“My education at Wittenberg has provided a strong foundation in sports management principles, particularly through courses like Event and Facility Management. These courses equipped me with the knowledge needed to plan and execute successful events, which I applied directly during my internship. The emphasis on communication and teamwork in my classes also prepared me to work effectively with others, whether it was coordinating with co-workers or interacting with fans.”
What advice might you give to others about the importance of securing an internship?
“Securing an internship is crucial for gaining real world experience that you simply can’t get in the classroom. It allows you to apply what you’ve learned in a practical setting, build professional connections, and develop skills that are essential for your future career. My advice would be to actively seek out opportunities, even if they’re outside your comfort zone, because the experience you gain will be invaluable.”
Tell me a little about your upcoming senior year and about this new opportunity to do broadcasting and PA work for the University.
“In my upcoming senior year, I’ll be taking on a new role in broadcasting and PA work for the University. I’ll be involved in live broadcasting of games and providing commentary, which is an exciting opportunity to enhance my communication skills and deepen my understanding of sports media. I’m looking forward to gaining experience in this field and exploring another aspect of the sports industry as I feel having a wide range of skills is essential in the sporting world.
“After graduating from Wittenberg, I plan to pursue a career in sport management. I really enjoyed my experience doing fan engagement and will probably pursue a job like that. My ultimate goal is to work within a professional sports organization, where I can combine my passion for sports with the skills I’ve developed during my time at Wittenberg and through my internships. I believe I have a good skillset that would contribute very well to any organization that may give me an opportunity. I look forward to using all the skills that I have learned at Wittenberg and believe they will help me be very successful in the future.”
