Wittenberg Creates Special Opportunities And Options For Commuter Students

As Wittenberg’s commuter student population has grown, the team at the University’s COMPASS: Sweet Success Center has increased its efforts to support them through the opening of a new Traveling Tigers Commuter Hub and additional commuter student parking, along with other student resources.

“Wittenberg’s commuter population has expanded to over 100 students, and we wanted to make sure these students felt more at home on our campus,” said Andrew Sawyer, associate director of student success at Wittenberg. “To date, we have repurposed space in the lower level of the Benham-Pence Student Center, converting it into the Traveling Tigers Commuter Hub. There are also designated parking spots in the Tower Hall lot and in the parking lot adjacent to the student center. There will be even more intentional programming for commuters once we fully navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The hub will service many in their academic and social journey at Wittenberg. University staff has recognized the value in providing a space for commuter students to congregate and collaborate. This investment in the commuter student experience is also linked with COMPASS’ success coaching and support resources to aid commuters in being successful at Wittenberg. Features of the hub will include a kitchenette for preparing meals, individual study areas, conference space, and lounge space with television and cable.

New programming currently being considered for fall includes:

  • Traveling Tiger Passport program (a ‘Welcome to Witt’ assignment) from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 26
  • Welcome Week reception from 8 to 9:15 p.m. on Aug. 26
  • Traveling Tigers Mix and Mingle from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 10
  • Hub specific student employment positions available on handshake.com

The Welcome Week reception, and commuter mixer, will take place in Geil Lounge, located on the lower level of the student center, and will provide commuter students with an opportunity to get to know their fellow commuter classmates as the school year starts. Light snacks will be served.

The new Traveling Tigers Commuter Hub is open from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. For additional commuter information, please email Andrew Sawyer at  sawyera@wittenberg.edu or visit https://www.wittenberg.edu/commuter
