Alumni Band Performs, Athletics Hall of Honor, Final Call To Refer Seniors

The year 2020 is about to conclude, and as I think about all we experienced as a community this past year, I do so with sincere appreciation and deepest respect. We called on our students, faculty, staff, and alumni to step up in ways that no one imagined when we all said "Happy New Year" 12 months ago.

Remembering Veterans, Alumni Survey, Thank You to Alumni Educators

In a few weeks, the traditional Thanksgiving holiday will be upon us. This special time of gathering will be very different in light of COVID-19 this year, but the sentiments that surround this annual event remain: We are thankful – deeply thankful – for all the support we have received this past year. The words of encouragement, gifts toward our COVID Crisis Fund, the sharing of expertise by our alumni physicians, and the overall commitment by everyone in our community to helping students succeed have all been an inspiration to each of us at Wittenberg.

Successful Virtual Alumni Weekend, New Alumni Board Members, Refer Students To Wittenberg

A week ago, we hosted our first-ever Virtual Homecoming experience. Sharon and I certainly missed everyone on campus, but I want to applaud our Alumni Engagement team for providing a range of virtual activities designed to highlight teaching excellence, alumni success, and 175 years of passing our light. Congratulations to all our Alumni Achievement Award recipients, and sincere thanks to the alumni, faculty, and staff who gave wonderful Zoom presentations throughout the weekend. Links to our winners and our presenters can be found below.

Virtual Homecoming Weekend, Mock Interview Program, Tigers Supporting Tigers

Less than a month ago, we resumed in-person classes as we kicked off the new academic year, August 17. This was a huge undertaking that required the efforts of everyone in our community and the leadership of two committees, which included alumni physicians Alan Stewart ‘69, Dave Hopper '63, and Laurice Moore '95. As a result, multiple measures were put in place that made it possible to bring our students back together safely in August. Three weeks in, and we are adjusting daily to our new reality, which I recently shared more about in Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s press conference Thursday.

Celebrating Philanthropic Success, Homecoming & Reunion Weekend Update, Intercollegiate Competition Suspended

In a year of celebrating Wittenberg’s 175th birthday, the collective power, support, and generosity of the University’s alumni and friends has been a story of its own. The passion and commitment of the Wittenberg community to affect change was tangible this last fiscal year (July 1, 2019–June 30, 2020) as evidenced by record-setting philanthropic success, proving once again that Tigers step up when called upon to do so. Because of Wittenberg alumni, faculty, staff, retirees, students, parents, and friends, Wittenberg surpassed several fundraising milestones.

Virtual Commencement, Virtual Alumni College, Student Success, Faculty News

There is a lot going on in our world. Through it all, Wittenberg remains committed to fostering a spirit of respect in all its community members. Some of our student leaders are organizing a virtual conversation with their peers and those of us who are on campus will gather (outdoors and 6’ apart) next week as we try to make sense of all that has transpired in the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death.

Distinguished Teacher, Wittenberg Tie, Hall of Honor Update, Cards of Gratitude

I hope this issue of Tiger Tales finds you each healthy and safe. As you can imagine, the COVID-19 situation has forced us to take unprecedented steps, but I remain grateful for the patience, understanding, and flexibility of the people of Wittenberg. This is a difficult time on our campus, in our community, across higher education, and everywhere. As we continue to navigate the uncertainty and adapt to the challenges presented by this ever-evolving global health crisis, it is important that we take a moment to highlight the positive and offer thanks.

Support Students, #GivingTuesdayNow, Alumni College, Tik Tok Triumph

Wittenberg has launched the COVID-19 Crisis Fund to provide support for emergency student needs, unforeseen expenses resulting from remote teaching and learning, and virtual meetings with key constituents, including prospective students and their families. To help lead this effort, Bob '65 and Bonnie Cindrich '66 have issued a challenge gift to match dollar for dollar up to $20,000 to inspire other alumni and friends to help at this critical time.

Huge Thank You, Peace Corps Ranking, Tiger Tank, Women in Sport

The events of the last two weeks were unprecedented in modern times, but I cannot begin to describe the outpouring of support we have received from concerned alumni and parents. We are making decisions daily that place the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff first, and that are informed by guidance from the CDC, Ohio Department of Health, the Governor's Office, and other state and federal agencies. That said, each decision is accompanied by a heavy heart as we know that our need to protect our community's health means that the residential living-learning experience we have provided for generations must temporarily shift, bringing with it a host of emotions for our students, faculty, and staff, and especially our seniors.

#Commit2Witt, Engage With Wittenberg

As members of the Alumni Board, we serve as a liaison for the University. In our role, we engage and connect with the alumni body to further Wittenberg’s mission and vision. We work in partnership with the University through the Advancement Division and have been thrilled to see engagement through the Alumni Chapters, Commit to Witt day, reunions, and homecomings. We hope that you received the recent Wittenberg Magazine, which shared good news about our graduates and students and noted that 2020 marks the 175thanniversary of Wittenberg University.

Happy New Year! We were excited to begin the celebration of our 175th birthday with the first-ever Witt Everywhere event. To everyone who took the time to tune in and/or submit questions, thank you.
