Hello. Everyone!
On behalf of the International Education Committee I am pleased to announce this year’s most deserving recipient of the Charles Chatfield Global Awareness Award, Rachael Fink. Had I presented this award at the Honors Convocation, I would have said “Welcome to our Honors Convocation” in three languages: French, as a French major who spent a semester in France, Russian, as a major in RCEP and a minor in the Russian language and in the main language spoken in Lesotho, where Rachael took part not only in the summer program with Dr. Rosenberg, but also the work she has done on campus as president of the Lesotho Nutrition Initiative.
I cannot speak Dance, but it is said it is an international language that speaks to all. As a dance minor Rachael choreographed a piece for the Fall Dance Concert in which she called attention to the plight of emigres, highlighting this performance by having every one of the dancers recite in 13 languages a translation of Lazarus’ Quote on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Rachael truly exemplifies the requirements of service, promoting international awareness both abroad and on campus, and a lifelong commitment to the values of the Charles Chatfield Award for Global Awareness.
