Hands-On Learning
Wittenberg's Marine Science program offers many opportunities for field study, which are practical, hands-on experiences that often lead to more extensive collaborative research projects with faculty members. One of the most popular field study experiences is currently taking place in The Bahamas.
New Partnership
Students interested in a career in forensic science now have the opportunity to achieve both two degrees in five years. Wittenberg has entered into an affiliated agreement with Bowling Green State University (BGSU) that leads to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in chemistry from Wittenberg and a Master of Science in Forensic Science (M.S.F.S.) with a specialization in forensic chemistry from BGSU.
Research Awards
Designed to match outstanding students with award-winning faculty, Wittenberg's new First Year Research Awards (FYRA) program provided opportunities for 12 high-achieving students to pursue an exciting research project with a faculty member during their first year at Wittenberg. Projects spanned the academic disciplines from biology and sociology to education and English.
Time In Texas
Wittenberg will be well represented at the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering to be held in Houston from June 27-July 1, with six students and four staff members from the Office of Admission and the Pastor’s Office attending. Alumni attending the event are invited to stop by the WhyGoLutheran.org area in the Interaction Center each day from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. to pick up a special alumni gift or look for Wittenberg in the NRG Dome each evening during the mass gathering.
Going Green
Wittenberg’s Sustainability Task Force is making great strides in the effort of “going green” across campus, recently establishing partnerships between the university, Parkhurst Dining Services and GoZero Services to compost food waste in the Center Dining Room (CDR) kitchen. Since then, more than 2,200 pounds of pre-consumer waste has been composted.
Engaged Learning
Is a small act meaningful? Does it matter to the larger problem? Does turning off the lights as you leave a room help solve climate change and global warming? Professor of Geology and Director of Environmental Science John Ritter, Zach Smith ’18 and Jeremy Block ’11 recently reflected on these questions after collaborating on a stream restoration project on Buck Creek.
HWA Update
Progress continues on the Health, Wellness and Athletics Facility, with much of the work focused on the 1929 Fieldhouse. Demolition of the HPER Center lobby began last month, and the reconstruction will continue through the summer. Concrete footings for steel columns in the new indoor practice facility are underway in preparation for the steel delivery in July.
Creating Leaders
Wittenberg will offer Activate, a summer leadership academy with an emphasis on entrepreneurship, social justice and inclusion, from June 24-27. The camp is designed for high school students entering grades 11 and 12, and the registration deadline is fast approaching. Click link below to learn more about how you can help.
Teaching Excellence
Assistant Professor of English Kate Polak’s book, Ethics in the Gutter: Empathy and Historical Fiction in Comics (Ohio State University Press, 2017), was recently nominated for a Will Eisner Comic Industry Award, described by Comic Con International as “the ‘Oscars’ of the comics world.”
