More prevalent than cystic fibrosis, Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy and Huntington’s disease, neurofibromatosis (NF) is the term for two distinct genetic disorders, NF1 and NF2.
The hallmark of NF1 is tumors that grow on the nerves anywhere in the body. NF1 may lead to blindness, deafness, brain and spinal tumors, severe disfig-urements, bone abnormalities, developmental delays and learning disabilities.
NF2 causes bilat-eral acoustic neuromas, brain and spinal tumors, and cataracts. A common disorder, NF equally affects both sexes, all races and ethnic groups.*
