Making the Elite List

Fiske Names Wittenberg a "Best Buy" in 2017 Guide

A leader in providing a high-quality, financially accessible liberal arts education, Wittenberg University has been named a “Best Buy” by the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2017. The recognition places the university on an elite list of only 26 private and 21 public colleges and universities in the United States, Canada and Great Britain.

For more than 30 years, the Fiske Guide to Colleges, created by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, has been a sought-after resource for prospective students and their families as it highlights a selective list of the best and most interesting schools.

The guide notes how Wittenberg’s founding by German Lutherans in 1845 helps the university remain “true to its faith by emphasizing strong student/faculty relationships.” Wittenberg’s commitment to community service is also cited, as are the university’s learning goals, “ranging from experience with writing and research to exposure to the natural sciences and foreign languages.”

Additionally, the school’s “comprehensive First-Year Programs” for new students stood out, as did Wittenberg professors who “are roundly praised for their teaching styles and willingness to make themselves available outside the classroom.”

“Wittenberg has always insisted on providing a well-rounded education that instills in its students the skills and confidence to make an impact on the world. Being named a Best Buy only reaffirms our desire to continue this tradition and ensure that more students can experience Wittenberg for themselves.”

Karen Hunt, Executive Director of Admission

In his 35 years studying colleges and universities, Edward Fiske said that schools can sometimes start to sound alike, but that isn’t the case with Wittenberg.

“Wittenberg’s history is different,” he said, adding that it has its “own particular flavor, personality and character.”

Fiske is an award-winning writer on topics ranging from trends in American higher education to school reform in Southeast Asia, New Zealand and South Africa. The guide was established in 1982 when, covering higher education for the Times, Fiske sensed the need for a publication that would help students and parents navigate the increasingly complex college admissions scene. The guide, an annual publication, immediately became a standard part of college admissions literature and is now the country’s bestselling college guide.

Those private schools joining Wittenberg on the list of “Best Buys” include Centre College, Elon University, Wabash College, Wheaton College, the University of St. Andrews, and Trinity College Dublin.
