With Wittenberg's on-campus Commencement now postponed until October 10, 2020, health and safety protocols permitting, the University is taking time to honor the Class of 2020 through this special website. All candidates for degrees were asked to submit their individual profiles and photos, and we are #WittProud to recognize them here.

My favorite Wittenberg memory was meeting my freshman room mate Grant Steele. Getting to know him throughout the year was one of the most fun and memorable things that I have done in the last four years. We did everything together as typical nervous freshman do. We went to parties, had classes, did homework, studied, played video games, and ate together each day without friends. It was phenomenal and he is a friend that I will have for the rest of my life. There are many other countless life-long friends, too many to list here, but getting to know him and growing outside of our comfort zones together was truly and incredible experience.

My mother was accepted but chose not to go for medical reasons, my cousin is a 2019 Graduate, my Aunt and Uncle are both Wittenberg Alumni, my Scoutmaster and his wife are both from Wittenberg, and many from my church. It was a place I had always heard about, and finally was able to explore and experience first-hand in 2015. My favorite Wittenberg memory is going on the Witt in Poland field studies trip with Dr. Anes and Dr. Wright in 2018. Dr. Wright taught Ideology and Identity in Polish Culture and Dr. Anes taught The Psychology of the Holocaust. We traveled the length of the country south to north. My favorite experience was being in Warsaw and privately touring the Presidential Palace and getting to meet a Holocaust-era rescuer. This was not your average field study trip; it was truly an immersing experience where I was able to learn so many things. I will cherish the memories that I made and look back at this experience in the future. It was one of the best experiences of my life! My favorite Wittenberg memory is spending time with Dr. Mattison and Dr. Yontz. These two always welcomed me into their offices and were willing to talk about anything. Each professor pushed me in different ways this year to be the best educator and person I could be. I cannot thank both of them enough for being patient with me while simultaneously pushing me to be the best person I could possibly be. These two are the professors that everyone wishes they could have in their college experience. They never judged, always listened, always understood. It was so refreshing to have professors that genuinely cared about me and took time to understand me. The many times I spent individually with each professor will forever be my favorite Witt memory. I’m so grateful to have two lifelong mentors (hopefully Dr. Mattison remembers me after his Tik Tok fame).

There are too many to name. The one most memorable currently was on the day that we found out that the rest of the semester and our commencement had been cancelled. I was on campus still, having been approved to be there, with a few friends and we had a mock graduation in Commencement Hollow where we each gave a speech about our time at Wittenberg. The few of us that had been there also stayed up the entire night sharing memories and enjoying our last night on campus as students. We did the senior sunrise together.
Extracurricular Activities

Why I Chose Witt
I originally came to run cross country. Wittenberg was not my first choice. I wanted to go to Denison. I had applied early admission and had gotten accepted. My dad urged me to at least go on a visit at Wittenberg. It's hard to describe what it was that changed my mind and led me to choosing Wittenberg. It was a feeling, being on campus and seeing the way people interacted, and connected with each other, the sense of community, and the way students talked about their experiences at Wittenberg when I asked. I didn't get that feeling at Denison. I am so happy I went out on a whim and ended up where I did. This place and the people there changed my life.

My favorite memory was when I planned and directed a Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow cast during my time on Union Board. It was a lot of work and required planning during the summer before. From beginning to end me and my cast created a program that was not only tons of fun but educational, providing a sex positive experience for our campus. Seeing so many people laugh and dress up for the night made all of my work worth it and being apart of something memorable made my Witt experience that more positive.
I chose Witt because of how much it cared about its students. This was exemplified through its professors and their willingness to be there no matter what you are going through. From my first visit I could sense just how close knit of a community it was and knew that I would find a place even with the fear of being so far away from home.

Why I Chose Witt
I was interested in Witt because of the competitive volleyball program, but ultimately chose Witt because I felt that it was a tight-knit community. Because of Witt's small size, you get to know and create better relationships with your classmates and professors and I thought that was really cool. I also knew I would be able to get involved in other activities besides volleyball, which may not have been the case at a bigger college.

My favorite memory from my time at Wittenberg would have to be my experience with the Political Science Senior Conference. The stress and anxiety related to that event immediately slipped away once I stood up in front of my professors and peers and began explaining my project, and it became fun. It was a moment that proved to me, without a doubt, that I was capable of moving on into the professional world and succeeding, and it is among the experiences that I will take from my time at Witt that shaped me into the person I am now. Passing with distinction was a massive plus as well. Ultimately, there isn't enough space for me to share all of my favorite memories from my time at Witt. I met some of the best people, made some of my best friends, and learned from some of the best professors in my four years here. While it may have ended under less than ideal circumstances, I have nothing but good things to say about the university, and the people who represent it. Tiger up!
Why I Chose Witt

My favorite Wittenberg memory is playing giant Jenga for my sorority at my first Greek Week. I was so close to winning and everyone started chanting my name.
Extracurricular Activities

Why I Chose Witt
I chose Wittenberg because I liked the one-on-one communication between professors and students. On my tour, I got to talk to sit in on an English 101 class and afterwards I got to talk to Dr. Hinson. I was astonished that professors walked the halls like everyone else and were greeting all of their students as they walked by. I had never seen that at any of the other colleges I visited. In the end, that is still my most favorite part about Wittenberg. I have felt supported by all of my professors and have never been afraid to ask for help.

My favorite Wittenberg memories all stem from one, lone group of people: The Shifters. They made me happy, when skies were gray.
Extracurricular Activities

Why I Chose Witt
I chose Wittenberg without ever seeing it--crazy, right? I submitted my deposit and moved in Fall 2016--it was one of the most impactful, influential and best things I have ever done with my life. Wittenberg was the PLACE where I could reinvent and educate myself; I could be whatever I wanted to be. I always like to say that I took a chance on Wittenberg, but in hindsight, Wittenberg took a chance on me--and I am grateful for each and every opportunity that was thrown my way.

Why I Chose Witt
As soon and my family and I stepped foot on campus for a tour, my mother knew this was the right place for me. Her opinion was not the biggest influence on my decision, but it was comforting to know that if I liked Witt, I would have her approval. On this tour, the architecture, the friendly people, and most of all Dr. Barry all contributed to the building feeling of belonging inside of me. Dr. Barry met with me and chatted for a while about the German program at Witt. Witt was somewhere I could explore my interests, study abroad, and be supported by professors who care deeply about their students.

My favorite Wittenberg memory has to be when Dr. Hasecke held our public policy course at the Seal on one of the first beautiful Spring days on campus. Our class sat on the benches while Dr. Hasecke taught from the seal. All around us it felt like campus was coming to life as the trees were blooming and students gathered in the area to hammock or play frolf. This moment captured the community of Wittenberg as this open area was a place for students to gather and enjoy themselves in the present while capturing the traditions of Witt that connect alumni back with the seal being at the center. As I watched Dr. Hasecke stand on the seal, I could not help but imagine what it would be like for me to come back as an alumna to stand there myself as he reminded us would be one day soon. His passion for the material and Wittenberg came through which I will always recall it as a moment that showed what Witt is all about, finding our own passions through our relationships and experiences.

Favorite Wittenberg Memory
My favorite memories at Wittenberg are so numerous that I could not possibly write it all down. But it is a very honest answer. It has been the people and lifelong friendships I have made here at Witt; they are the ones that have been there for some of my best college memories and Witt experiences. Witt is truly a special and wonderful place and the ones who you experience it with create your own unique Wittenberg experience. The little moments that I have had, those are the ones I have cherished the most: the unexpected hang-out plans, the random debates with my friends/roommates, traveling for sports, and trying to remember what happened last night at breakfast; just some examples of those memories. Throughout those four years at Witt the best memory would be being the front porch of Swim House with my housemates and friends hanging out and watching the sunset behind Weaver Chapel and our beautiful campus.
Extracurricular Activities
Men’s Swimming and Diving, Delta Tau Delta, SAAC, Water Polo Manager, and Summer conference staff and The Shifters.
Why I Chose Witt
I came across Witt through a recruiting firm because I wanted to continue my swimming career in college. I was looking for schools in the Pacific Northwest and the Midwest, so Witt checked that one out. I took an overnight recruiting visit in the fall of my senior year in high school, and it was the only campus I really felt this was the place where I would be next fall. After these four years I truly felt that I am so glad I choose Witt. I love Witt and I would never trade the expertise I have had a Witt with anything else and I never looked back on my choose.

My favorite memory at Wittenberg would be during my freshman year. Some of my closest friends, Andrew O'Malley and Jenny Larrick, needed to make a movie for their Chinese Film and Fiction class. Our friend group banded together and acted in their horror movie for them. We did most of the plot as improv, hoping for natural lines and acting. It ended up being a lot of fun, and we even made a blooper real to look back on later. This moment is what solidified this group of friends for me, and they have been my friends all through college. I would also like to mention my entire study abroad experience in Wittenberg, Germany. While there are too many great memories to count, the entire experience helped shape me as an individual and forced me outside of my comfort zone. I went with my best friends and made some new ones along the way. Thank you to Dr. Waggoner for leading my group. I love you.
Why I Chose Witt
I chose Wittenberg for a few reasons. I am a Lutheran, so I loved the idea of connecting with a Lutheran campus. I also wanted a smaller school because I liked the community that I felt when I visited Wittenberg. I didn't want to disappear like I would at a big school. Wittenberg has a beautiful campus, and they always try to have something going on so that it feels like more than just learning. The professors are wonderful, and so I loved that I would have the opportunity to form a real relationship with them.

One of my favorite times at Witt was during freshman year when everyone in my hall would have their doors open, where all of us would play our music, dance, and just pop in to share all of our stories and just spend time together. Before Wittenberg, I never had friends that I felt like I could be myself around and within the first couple of weeks I found friends that regardless of how long we go without talking or hanging out I will always love and would do anything for. I love you all so much, thank you Kenz, Kat, Kate, Bets, Kenerd, and Emma for being the people that made me call Witt my home. Out of my time at Witt, I've had so many memories that it's hard to pick an absolute favorite. In having to do so, I would choose my freshman year move-in day hypnotist show. This was one of my first memories on campus, and set the tone for how my Witt career would turn out.

When searching for colleges, I wanted a small campus, and aimed for one that offered a lot in my major. Once I got to Witt, both of these fell into place. After sitting in on a class, I knew I wanted to experience Witt's academics, and the opportunities they offered. While campus itself just felt right to be on. While these are what drew me to Witt, my decision was added by the multiple involvement opportunities and activities on campus. Overall, the feel of Witt and the things it offered are why I made my decision.

Studying abroad and having fun adventures with my travel group was amazing. Once I opened up to everybody, there was never a dull moment.
For the first month or so, I was quiet—hanging out with new people, but listening more than talking, melancholy because of certain parts of my life. However, at the bars, in the common room we all shared, in the streets exploring—people were genuine. Strangers were, likewise, just as genuine, being honest about their ambitions and fears and lives. For the first time, I felt entirely comfortable with myself; up until that point, every time I tried to share something about myself made me feel like they were uncomfortable, like people were happier talking about themselves (even if that wasn’t true).
Now, I’m much more open. Life experience builds character, after all, and there’s so many wonderful people I can share with and learn from.
Also confident now. I wrote 358 pages of a novel draft to graduate, and it might be cocky, but I know I did great.

As a heterosexual white woman, I really treasured the opportunity of being invited as a student speaker at the 2019 Shades of Pear Symposium. It was such an honor to be in attendance and to hear the personal experiences all the other extraordinary guest, faculty, and student speakers. I truly learned a lot regarding my role as a white ally and felt simultaneously welcomed to dialogue and engage despite my majority status. I am thankful that our campus has the opportunity and responsibility to host more racially, ethnically, and sexually diverse conversations that promote further acceptance, inclusion, and ultimately true equality within our student body and throughout the community. Another one of my favorite memories was watching my best friend (Naomi Santos) graduate from Wittenberg just a few years prior to my own attendance. I am sad we will be unable to stomp the seal or walk across the hallow this year. But I am hopeful we will all be able to get together soon. Go tigers!
I chose Witt due to the caliber of our faculty and staff members. In fact, I remember a Witt alumni telling me that I may dislike the students/my classmates but I would love the professors. They were right! Except, I've met some pretty great students as well, and I am always inspired by the work I see our community doing. Plus, I love how small and intimate our campus/community is. As an adult transfer student (who lives off campus), I've still made some sweet friendships with my classmates and former professors. It's nice that I can always visually spot people I've been in class with or worked on a group project with multiple times just during my quick walk from the car to Hollenbeck etc. Oh, and our campus is absolutely gorgeous. It reminds me of a New England prep school!

Another favorite memory would be the class sessions held outside. The professors and students alike were refreshed! It was the simple enjoyment of birds singing, the breeze blowing and genuine appreciation for the gorgeous Wittenberg University campus that made these times so special! Class by the seal was a sure favorite!
Extracurricular Activities

Favorite Wittenberg Memory
Everyone who knows me probably realizes I am a little tiny bit obsessed with grades, so I rarely missed class. I have to admit though, some of my best memories at Witt happened when the weather was just too perfect to sit in a classroom. Those are days I went tube-sledding in the hollow, or explored Yellow Springs, or went searching for all the silver tigers on campus. The students and professors here at Witt have given me so many memories that I will never stop appreciating.
Extracurricular Activities

Why I Chose Witt
It is a little embarrassing, but the only reason I originally applied to Witt was how nice campus looked on the internet (I was 17 years old, cut me some slack). It looked so nice, it felt out of my league. When I finally visited in person, it so different; was cold and raining, and there were people mudsliding in the hollow. I knew right away Witt was where I wanted to be.
